Who Are We ?

The Egyptian Society of Animal Friends is a registered charity whose mission is to improve the welfare of the individual animal through our shelters and adoption programme , while at the same time improve the welfare of all animals in Egypt through outreach,.  Specifically, we seek to:

  • Increase awareness of animal welfare issues through education and outreach programmes.
  • Stop overpopulation in a humane manner, including emphasis on Trap-Neuter-Release approaches.
  • Provide a temporary shelter and adoption programme for unwanted and rescued animals.
  • Advocate on behalf of domestic, working, and captive animals and wildlife, Zoological Gardens and slaughterhouses including development of animal welfare legislation and support for the fledgling Egyptian Federation of Animal Welfare Societies so we can speak with a louder combined voice to improve animal welfare

 Brief history and achievements

The Egyptian Society of Animal Friends was formally registered as a charitable society with the Government of Egypt in March 2002.  The registration process was a major accomplishment in itself, as NGOs are tightly regulated and monitored by the Government in response to terrorist and destabilization concerns.  Our initial goal was primarily to provide a shelter and adoption service for dogs and cats.  However, over time we have come to understand that we must also concurrently take steps to improve the welfare of the hundreds of thousands of animals in Egypt beyond the limited number we can touch through our shelter and adoption programme.  This is through education and outreach, and getting animal welfare legislation in place.

However, we continue to give significant attention to our shelter and adoption programme – it increases our name recognition in the community, attracts members and donations, and opens doors for us to work toward our broader scale animal welfare initiatives.

We have about 80 members, a mix of Egyptians and expats.

During late 2003 and 2004 we have been making the difficult transition from a “mom and pop” operation based almost totally on volunteers, to a more sustainable organizational structure with a core paid staff (admin, vet, cleaners) supported by our volunteers.   We have also instituted more systematic accounting procedures, written job descriptions, and developed operational policies.
