The Egyptian Society of Animal Friends was
formally registered as a charitable society with the Government
of Egypt in March 2002. The registration process was a major
accomplishment in itself, as NGOs are tightly regulated and
monitored by the Government in response to terrorist and
destabilization concerns. Our initial goal was primarily to
provide a shelter and adoption service for dogs and cats.
However, over time we have come to understand that we must also
concurrently take steps to improve the welfare of the hundreds of
thousands of animals in Egypt beyond the limited number we can
touch through our shelter and adoption programme. This is
through education and outreach, and getting animal welfare
legislation in place.

Herndon, VA – Dozens of handmade catnip toys have been created and donated to homeless cats at the PAWS-Kuwait animal shelter, thanks to a project dubbed “Operation Happy Sock.” United States Girl Scout Troop 6388 collected unwanted, clean socks from friends and family members and converted them into catnip toys by stuffing them with catnip and fibrefill. Usually, Operation Happy Sock participants donate their catnip toys to local animal shelters to shelters in the U.S., but in this case the Brownies of Troop 6388 chose to ship their creations to the PAWS shelter, from Fairfax Virginia to faraway Kuwait.
“It was really easy and simple to do. Almost everyone seems to have unwanted socks, and they’re happy to put them to good use”, says troop leader Marci Hoyt. “Making the Happy Socks was lots of fun for the girls.”
“Homeless cats deserve a little fun,” adds fellow troop leader Cheryl Marcey, “but we know that many animal shelters have no budget for buying toys for the pets. When we heard about the PAWS shelter in Kuwait, we thought they especially deserving.”

ADAM: Among the biggest achievements of BETA for the year 2009 was the rescue of a Lion from captivity. Adam, as we named him, was transported to Lebanon illegally in hopes to be sold; through the course of his life he was unlucky enough to end up left in a small cage with no food or water & hanging on to his last breath. He was discovered on the 27th of August in the back of a pet store in the Quarantina area by a concerned citizen who called BETA in a desperate attempt to save his life.
