Pet
shop case
ESAF and ESMA in association
with some individuals are already in the
process of filing a cruelty case against one of the
worst pet shops in
Cairo. This is the beginning of concentrated
campaign against Egyptian
pet shops.
Another case will soon be
filed against the Ministry of Agriculture to stop
the present system of animal control i.e. poisoning,
shooting and beating.and to consider humane methods
to control stray animals.
Please join the campaign by
:
1) Not buying animals from
any pet shop.
2) When you see any cause
for complaint or any unacceptable conditions:
** Cages too small, very
short leash unable to move, in direct sun light, no
shade , no food or water, obviously sick animals,
any thing that could be consider cruelty,
Please report to the police
station ( jurisdiction of where the pet shop is
cated) and file a compalint based on article 357 of
penal law:
Article 357 stipulates that:
“Any individual who willfully kills or poisons
without purport a tame animal not mentioned in
Article 355 or does it any major harm shall be
punished by a jail sentence that does not exceed 6
months or by a fine that will not exceed 200 LE”.
Also the Ministr of
Agriculture Ministerial Decree No 27 for year 1967:
Defining cases of cruelty against Animals
The Ministry of
Agriculture after reviewing article #119 of law# 53
year1966, issuing of the Agricultural law has hereby
decreed.
Article 1: The following
cases shall be considered cruelty against animals:
a/ Overworking animals
intended for riding or carrying loads, by
overloading them beyond their capability and age.
Also the use of animals suffering from
incapacitating illness, wounds or deformities, that
do not allow them to work normally.
b/ Incarcerating, tying
or torturing the animal for no justifiable reason,
or negligence in providing it with the required
food, water and air.
c/ Engaging animals in
bullfighting , cockfighting and wrestling purposes.
d/ Tying up the animal
for the purpose of being a target.
e/ Forcing an animal to
perform particular movements under terror or
torture.
f/ Forcing an animal to
eat and drink quantities that are above and beyond
its ability, for the purpose of increasing its
weight.
g/ Making an animal
perform unfamiliar work that puts it in a panic or
torture, such as making horses dough the mud.
h/ Resorting to cruelty
in preparing animals for slaughter at abattoirs such
as hitting their heads, cutting their limbs or
piercing their eyes
or
cutting the tender.
Article 2 : This decree
with be published in the official Egyptian journal
and shall come into effect from 11March 1967.
